Jojoba is one of the most amazing plants I have discovered in my search for financial freedom. It provides several channels to make money. In this article, I cover several topics ranging from cosmetics to fuel. This plant naturally grows in the desert. It requires so little care and provides so much abondunce that it’s hard to find another crop that offers more upside.

What Is Jojoba Good For?

I’m glad you asked! This amazing oil isn’t actually an oil. It’s technically a wax ester. To my knowledge, it is the only natural wax ester not made by a mammal. Wax ester is that waxy/oily sheen you get on your skin. When people say they have oily skin, really what they have is waxy skin. For hundreds of years, this wax ester was collected from the hunting of sperm whales. Traditionally used for cosmetics, this tradition was placing a big strain on the of sperm whales to survive becoming extinct.

I believe it was somewhere around the 1970’s researches began to seek out alternatives to help save the sperm whales. Jojoba was discovered to be an excellent source and required no mammals losing their lives to produce it. Since this discover, jojoba oil has been widely accepted by the cosmetic industry.

Today jojoba oil is used in everything from shampoo to lipstick. Since this wax ester is the essentially identical to the same waxes our skin produces, it is often less suseptible to causing irration. For many who are vegan, jojoba oil offers a natural plant based solution to many cosmetics.

Using Jojoba For Fuel

As amazing as it is, this special plant doesn’t stop at cosmetics. It can be used for fuel.

Before I dive too deep into this, I’d like to give you a little history lesson. Rudolf Diesel originally considered vegetable oils as a primary fuel for diesel engines. Mineral oils and other non-petroleum fuels were also experimented with. I bring all this up to basically tell you that jojoba oil is an excellent fuel for diesel motors. If you have a crop of jojoba and a diesel motor; either truck or generator, you have power. Imagine being able to be energy independent from five acres of jojoba. How amazing is that? In fact, experiments have show that jojoba burns cleaner that traditional diesel and it’s compression is more gentle on the motor. In cold weather, some additives need to be used, but as long as the weather is warm, jojoba oil is perfectly usable on it’s own.

 How Much Money Can I Make From Jojoba?

The jojoba seed contains as much as 65% oil by weight. That is amazing. An estimated five acres of jojoba will produce  1000-2000 gallons of jojoba oil per year. It takes about 3-5 years for a jojoba plant to reach maturity. Once it does reach maturity, it should produce oil for over 100 years.

The retail rates for jojoba oil is approximately $120 a gallon. If you plan to sell your oil at wholesale rates, you should easily be able to demand $40 a gallon. A five acre plot producing 1000-2000 gallons of oil translates to $40,000 to $80,000 USD per year. That has to place it on the top of the list of most profitable plants per acre. To add more awesomeness to this, once mature, the adult jojoba plant requires very little care. Prunning only helps with harvesting with mechanical equipment. The plant hates too much water. About the only downside is you need to live in a desert enviornment to grow this plant. I will 100% be growing jojoba as I build up my homestead.

If you are extra ambitious, you could produce your own line of lotions, skin care, hair treatments, and other cosmetics from your own jojoba oil. This could possibly make you so much money that you don’t need another source of income. At $120 a gallon retail, it only takes 1000 gallons to produce $120,000 a year. That is the mimium amount five acres of jojoba plants should produce! Covert that into actual products and the sky’s the limits for how much you can make. Simply creating a jojoba butter brand could produce as much as $15 an ounce! However you cut it, jojoba is a crop you should consider if you live in the desert.
