Growing Mushrooms: A Source Of Income That Is Very Regional

Written by Vince Wheeler

How Much Money Can You Make Growing Mushrooms?

Mushrooms are very profitable and often require much less room to grow than most crops. You could make anywhere from $20,000 for a small operation into the millions of dollars for large operations. Based on Penn State data, a 100-sqf grow bed should, on average, produce 592 pounds of mushrooms every 14 weeks. That’s just shy of 4 cycles per year. Four multiplied by 592 gives us a 2,368 pound annual harvest. For button mushrooms, the average price is a little over $4 per pound. Since you can’t expect to get market prices as a wholesaler you should divide that by one-third. $3,157 profit per 100-sqf. To make a $20,000 income, you’ll need a 633-sqf grow bed.

Keep in mind, this pricing is for the cheapest mushrooms you can grow. Once you step up to more valuable mushrooms, the profit goes up drastically. A conservative price for Lion’s Mane Mushrooms at wholesale prices is about $5 per pound. That same bed (633-sqf) would then produce as much as $74,497.

If you can successfully grow Cordycepts Militaris you will begin to see the highest profits possible from mushrooms. These fungi can sell for as much as $800 a pound. Research is showing these particular mushrooms have a big impact on respiratory system and endurance. This field is still growing and few people have successfully created commercial operations. The market is wide open for the more risk tolerant mushroom grower! With Covid-19 damaging many people’s respiratory system, something like Cordycepts Militaris could prove to have a growing demand as people learn about it’s benefits.

Keep in mind, this is all based on my research. I have yet to grow mushrooms, so once I do, I will update this data to help give you real world information based on my personal experience. The data I used to reach these calculations is based on various websites, but mostly from Penn State University research.

What are the most popular Mushrooms?

Obviously this varies from country to country, but within the United States, white button mushrooms are by far the most consumed mushroom. From there you step out into some mushrooms with similar looks and slightly more robust flavors. The Shiitake, Cremini, and Portabello top the list. Because of it’s ease of growing, the up and comer is the oyster mushroom. Some claim it’s the easiest to grow indoors. The morel is very popular, but rarely makes it to market. They are seasonal and regional. They don’t ship well, so there’s little chance you’ll get to taste this mushroom unless you live in a region where they grow. The pacific northwest is famous for it’s morel mushrooms! Since this article is about making money with mushrooms, we only give the morel an honorary mention. You should decide which mushrooms you enjoy eating and start from there.

It’s also a good idea to reach out to local restaurants and ask the owners and chefs which variety they’d be interested in buying from you if you grew it for them. This will allow you to see what your local demand is and help build your customer list prior to actually investing time and money into producing mushrooms.

Here’s a recipe for a quick and easy mushroom soup that is amazing and delicious. You’ll never buy store bought cream of mushroom again!

Is mushroom farming a good choice for you?

Obviously this is a loaded question. Only you can really decide if you’re up for the task. With that said, here are some cosiderations. Are you maticoulous about being sanitary? You’re growing something that also creates environments that other less desirable things grow in. Such as mold and mildew. Warm, moist rooms are a recipe for disaster if you’re not a clean person. While preparing your beds, bags, or whatever method you choose, having a sterile inviornment is critical to success.

If on the other hand, you thrive in more challenging grow conditions and are maticulous about being clean, growing muchroom might be a great choice for you.

Final Thoughts

I plan to grow Cordycepts Militaris and probably some white button mushrooms. I’m interested in exploring some of the other varieties, but I will follow my own advice and speak to local restaurant owners and chefs before I make a definitive choice. Particularly in the case of Cordycepts Militaris, you have the ability to buy a freeze dry machine for about $5,000 and produce your own capsules for market. You can also sell the powder from freeze dried Cordycepts. This gives you a self-stable product that I believe will only grow in demand. At $800 a pound, it’s hard to think of many other items you can legally grow that produce those kinds of profits.

Three Reason I’ll Be Growing Cordycepts

  1. You can freeze dry them for long term storage.
  2. For legal (non-hallucinogenic) mushrooms, they have the highest profit per pound.
  3. I believe the market will only grow as people learn of the benefits. With Covid-19 damaging people’s lungs, the respiratory and endurance benefits should only increase the demand for this fungi.

I’m not an expert at growing mushrooms. I see it as a great source of income. Because many varieties can’t be shipped very far, this opens up local demand. If you take the time to identify what varieties of mushrooms your local market is seeking out, you could create a niche market with very little demand.

As I dive into this and learn more, I’ll update you with new articles and videos.

Here Are Some Common Questions About Mushrooms That People Want To Know About

What is needed to grow mushrooms at home?

Growing mushrooms at home requires a few essential items. First, you will need a spawn, which is a material that contains mushroom spores. You can purchase spawn from a reputable supplier or make your own by growing mycelium on a substrate such as grain or sawdust. You will also need a growing medium, which is the material that the mushrooms will grow on. Common growing mediums include straw, hardwood sawdust, and composted manure.

Next, you will need a container to hold the growing medium. This can be anything from a plastic tub to a wooden box, as long as it can be sealed to maintain a high level of humidity. You will also need a source of moisture, such as a spray bottle or mister, to keep the growing medium moist. Finally, you will need a warm and humid environment, which can be achieved with a heat mat and a humidifier.

How long does it take for mushrooms to grow?

The time it takes for mushrooms to grow depends on the type of mushroom and the growing conditions. Some mushrooms, such as shiitake and oyster mushrooms, can be harvested in as little as two to three weeks, while others, such as morel mushrooms, can take several months to grow. The growing conditions, including temperature, humidity, and light, can also affect the growth rate.

Is it hard to grow mushrooms?

Growing mushrooms can be challenging, but it is not necessarily difficult. The key to success is to understand the needs of the particular type of mushroom you are growing and to maintain the correct growing conditions. Mushrooms require a high level of humidity and a warm, dark environment to grow. They are also sensitive to contamination, so it is essential to maintain a sterile growing environment.

How do you grow mushrooms for beginners?

If you are new to growing mushrooms, it is best to start with a beginner-friendly variety such as oyster mushrooms. To grow oyster mushrooms, you will need to purchase spawn and a growing medium, such as straw or hardwood sawdust. Mix the spawn with the growing medium and place it in a container, such as a plastic tub. Seal the container and maintain a high level of humidity by misting the growing medium regularly. Keep the container in a warm, dark place and wait for the mushrooms to grow. Harvest the mushrooms when they are mature and enjoy!

Can you grow mushrooms in potting soil?

Mushrooms cannot be grown in potting soil alone because it does not provide the necessary nutrients or structure for the mushrooms to grow. However, potting soil can be used as a component of a growing medium. A common recipe for a mushroom growing medium includes a mixture of hardwood sawdust, straw, and potting soil.

Do mushrooms grow back every year?

Whether mushrooms grow back every year depends on the type of mushroom and the growing conditions. Some mushrooms, such as morel mushrooms, only grow for a short period each year and do not come back the following year. Other mushrooms, such as oyster mushrooms, can be grown continuously in the right conditions. Mushrooms can also grow back if the growing medium is not fully depleted and the environment is suitable for their growth.

How often do mushrooms reproduce?

Mushrooms reproduce when the mycelium, which is the vegetative part of the mushroom, produces spores. The frequency of spore production depends on the type of mushroom and the growing conditions. Some mushrooms, such as shiitake mushrooms, can produce spores continuously, while others, such as morel mushrooms, only produce spores during a short period of time each year. The production of spores is also affected by environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and light.

To wrap things up, mushrooms offer a variety of oppertunity to create income on your off grid property. You can grow specialty mushrooms such as cordycepts or grow mushrooms for farmers markets and local restaurants. Pound for pound, mushrooms are one of the most profitable crops you can grow. Plus the material left over after you’re done growing mushrooms is an excellent addition for gardens. The microbs that are present improve soil condition and offer fungal elements that can be hard to get into your garden in other ways. All around, mushrooms are an excellent addition to the homestead.
